Looking to grow and fine-tune your literary flash work – your artistry with gravitas? The heart of this workshop moves beyond good intentions into creating new work (fiction, nonfiction, poetry) into flash, or what’s been called “the people’s genre.” Push beyond the limits of what you think you can do into smashing realms you’ve seen in your dreams! Participants will receive a workbook loaded with fiction, nonfiction, poetry, prompts, revision guidelines, and things you always wanted to know – how to review a book; how to pitch a review, interview, or article; where to pitch; and how to celebrate.

Birch Bark Editing’s Cat Parnell is offering this asynchronous workshop from Sunday, April 14-Monday, April 22. The prompt-rich workshop will include information about compressed and fluid writing, revision, and literary journal submissions, as well as a session on pitching and writing book reviews and articles. We’ll discuss short prose and poems and combine our curiosity with creativity. The workshop includes two optional Zoom sessions, one an open-ended Q & A, and the other will feature participant readings followed by feedback and applause from a dedicated cohort. Spring into a charged-up spirit in a supportive setting and make solid progress on your work this April!

Come learn about the magical world of writing flash fiction, genre style! Flash-length writing in multiple genres is experiencing a surge in online and physical magazines taking shorter work—including publications solely focused on speculative writing such as science fiction, fantasy, dystopian, time travel, horror, and more. These shorter stories succeed in transporting readers out of our daily lives to entirely imagined spaces. With genre writing, these readers may explore new worlds made up of new technology, magic, an entirely different time, or even fall down holes of horror, all in mere minutes.

Birch Bark Editing’s MaxieJane Frazier is offering this online, asynchronous flash writing workshop built for writers at any point in their journey (beginner through advanced) who want to focus on creating a few short pieces that experience revision toward submission. We will have a detailed overview of the flash genre and opportunities to write and share our flash fiction. The first week is entirely generative and second focuses on revision. We will end the course by finding a completely optional date to meet up for an online reading of the work you are intending to submit.
